Best ways to spend Christmas in Europe

Unlike in the United States where official Christmas holidays are regarded as the 24th night and 25th day, or in Asia where the whole family dont usually gather to share food & presents next to the must-have Xmas tree (these kinds of celebration are associated with New Year), European countries are perfect places for young people to celebrate these meaningful holidays which extend to even 2 weeks taking into account the breaks before and after official Xmas holidays: 24th, 25th & 26th. The rest dates of the year are also considered end-of-the-year public holidays in the European Union.

Things I love the most during these ending time of the year are the food, the markets, gorgeous lighting decoration everywhere lightening up & bringing lives to the cold atmosphere, and the meetings with family & friends whom we have not met for a long time. As a foreign student from a totally different culture & doing my kind of 2nd exchange abroad, I had chance to celebrate Xmas in such a diverse & unexpected way.

1. Week before: Xmas market in Germany

Best cities in Germany that I was recommended to check out the Xmas markets were Munster, Munich and Berlin. I chose the very near German city Bremen to visit though, because it was an extremely cheap option organized by ESN Groningen. Lots of hot wine (Glühwein) and German food we had in the market were exceptional.

2. 24th night - dinner with family 

After giving presents to closest friends here and say goodbye to them before they return to their home country to celebrate Xmas with family in their own national way, I could not be sadder. Normally European families gather, share lots of food, drinks, presents with each other in their own unique ways. Many friends of mine travel to other countries for new experiences but I decided to celebrate in Groningen with some of my housemates with lots of dishes from different European nationalities. We also shared wishes for each other.

 3. 25th & 26th - Xmas in Amsterdam

Wanting to celebrate Xmas in a new city with a family, I decided to travel to Amsterdam to meet a Chinese friend who I have not seen for long time. The whole family were so welcoming here that I felt like treated as at home. We also had special family meals with hot pot (which I love so much and was craving for) and presents given to each other. Then we went ice-skating (1st time in my life), and partying in one of the nicest bar in Amsterdam, followed by a long day shopping in Roermond Designer outlet.

I-EAT-STERDAM part 2

One picture worths a thousand words. That is true!

Every photo has an interesting story behind it. Here's mine :)

My most memorable food-ish expererience in Amsterdam was at Albert Cyup Markt - the biggest street food market in Amsterdam. I enjoyed the energetic, chaotic and noisy atmosphere of the market made of dozens of stores and flows of buyers.

The first 'dish' ever I tried in Albert Cyup was poffertjes. You can have a sweet taste of these little tiny pancakes just with a few coins.

Fried fish was definitely better than haring. 

Another must-try food in Nederland is waffels. This reminds me of the sweetest gift ever I received from my tour guide in Amsterdam back then in Helsinki when we first met. A package of sweets like Stroopwaffle always make wonderful gift for friends when travelling around Europe. 

We end the food day by a huge dinner with lofs of meat, potatoes and cabbages before lots of drinking and partying. It was a nice and warm experience to enjoy for the first time traditional home-made dishes (Andijviestamppot met spekjes and slavink) with the Dutch people.

Dutch beer are amazingly cheap and well tasting with plenty of flavours that females would love to try! I was running around the story like a little kid crawling for candies when I saw 50-cents beer and ciders, which should normally cost 1-2 euros in Finland where I lived.

I-EAT-STERDAM part 1 (AMSTERDAM phần 1)

Feeling like I was ready for another adventure rather than getting stuck in Helsinki, I decided to apply for exchange to Netherlands in spring 2014.  So far this was one of the most risky decision in my student life. I have always heard great stories about Holland, about how friendly people are, that the food are nice, the city is modern and green, people speak perfect English and so on. I was surprised that Amsterdam proved that right!

Cảm thấy mình đã sẵn sàng cho những cuộc phiêu lưu mới thay vì việc ở yên tại Helsinki, tôi quyết định đăng ký chương trình trao đổi học sinh với một trường ở Hà Lan đầu năm 2014. Tôi đã từng được nghe những câu chuyện tuyệt vời về đất nước Hà Lan, con người thân thiện nơi đây, cùng đồ ăn ngon, thành phố xanh sạch hiện đại và tất cả mọi người hầu như đều thông thạo tiếng anh. Amsterdam đã làm tôi vô cùng bất ngờ khi đặt chân tới đây. Những gì moi người nói hoàn toàn đúng với thành phố này.

Croquette, Cheese Waffle & Frikandel Speciaal - FEBO 

The first typical Dutch food I ever tried on my first day in Amsterdam were Croquette, Cheese waffle and Frikandel Speciaal with mayonnaise, curry and onion. They were freaking delicious, full of fat and joy. Fastfood are placed into different shelfs so you can put coins into the machine and serve yourself, though we bought it normally from the cashier. 

Đồ ăn đặc chất Hà Lan mà tôi thử trong ngày đầu tiên ở Amsterdam là Croquette, Cheese Waffle và Frikandel Speciaal cùng sốt mayonnaise, cà ri và hành. Đây  là một trong những món mà tôi thích nhất trong thơì gian ở đây. Các món ăn nhanh được cho vào các ngăn trong máy, bạn chỉ cần bỏ xu vào tự mua và tự phục vụ, hoặc có thể mua từ người bán hang theo cách thông thường.

Frozen Yoghurt - Frozz Love

Frozen Joghurt neither in my to-do-food or any kind of typical Dutch food, though it was good dessert for us after the deep fried fastfood we had. The fresh and reasonably sweet taste of fruits mixed well with the cold sour taste of the yogurt made a perfect cup. The store was colourful and playful decorated like many other stores also in Amsterdam, which partly made the city alive and energetic!

Món sữa chua lạnh không nằm trong kế hoạch ẩm thực ở Ams của tôi, nhưng đây cũng là một món ăn tráng miệng lý tưởng. Vị ngọt mát vừa phải của hoa quả trộn lẫn với vụ chua ngọt của sữa chua lạnh làm nên một cốc Frozen Yoghurt tuyệt vời. Cửa hàng được trang trí sặc sỡ sắc màu và vui mắt giống như nhiều cửa hang khác ở Ams. Đây là điều góp phần làm cho thành phố luôn tràn đầy sự sống và năng lượng!

Cheese - Henri Willing cheese and more

I had luck to taste lots of different kinds of Dutch cheese here such as cheese with herb, spicy cheese, goat cheese, etc. Cheese stores are everywhere. Cheese are added to many fried food here in Holland. It is such an important component of Dutch cuisine that I could not miss adding it to my post.

Tôi may mắn được thử rất nhiều loại phô mai Hà Lan ở đây: phô mai với cây thảo, phô mai cay, phô mai dê, vân vân. Cửa hang phô mai tràn ngập khắp mọi nơi ở Ams. Phô mai cũng là nguyên liệu phụ cho them vào rất nhiều các món ăn chiên ở Hà Lan. Đây là một trong những nguyên liệu quan trọng của ẩm thực Hà Lan.

Haring - Frens Haringhandel

One of the most famous and nasty food (in my opinion) I have had in Amsterdam was haring - raw fish with onions and pickles. Everyone was so crazy about how delicious and popular it was, though it tasted horribly to me because I have never been a fan of raw seafood except for Salmon in Sushi. The haring ended up going to my friend's after my first bite. I was even terrified the whole afternoon thinking of the raw 'sea-taste' of the fish which smell like I was still alive in my mouth!

Một trong những món ăn mà tôi cho là nổi tiếng và ‘kinh dị’ nhất ở Ams là Haring- cá sống ăn kèm hành và dưa chuột muối. Mọi người đổ xô đến Ams ăn haring vì cho rằng đây là món nổi tiếng và ngon cực kỳ, nhưng tôi đã không thể ăn đến miếng thứ 2. Vì chưa từng là fan của cá sống (ngoại trừ cá hồi ăn với Sushi) nên tôi quyết định món đó sẽ đi vào dạ dày của người bạn đồng hành với mình hôm đó. Suốt cả chiều tôi vẫn còn rùng mình khi nghĩ đến mùi tanh của cá tưởng như còn sống trong miệng!

Bubble Tea - Yoyo Fresh Teabar 

It has been a while since I taste 'real bubble tea' since they dont have it in Helsinki. I took the one with orginal Jasmine tea and it felt as if I was in Vietnam because the tea tasted perfectly! The store was decorated with lots of small cute things all over the place. The nice feature of the bubble tea was more about the relaxing atmosphere rather than the tea itself.

Lâu lắm rồi tôi mới được nếm đúng vị trà sữa vì ở Helsinki không bán trà sữa ngon như ở Hà Nội. Kéo ngay cô bạn ghé ngay vào quán trà sữa đúng lúc khát, tôi mua trà sữa vị trà xanh truyên thống. Lúc đó tôi cảm giác được làm một chuyến về Việt Nam vậy vì vị trà sữa giống y hệt! Cửa hàng được bày trí rất bắt mắt với những đồ trang trí dễ thương được bày biện khắp mọi nơi. Điều cuốn hút của cửa hàng thay vì đồ uống là không khí thư giãn và yên tĩnh.

Patatje Met (Fries) -  Manneken Pis

Another must-have food in the Netherlands is the fries. The fries are bigger than the normal ones, mayonnaise sauce are amazing added ingredients so make itself famous! People lined up for the fries and the size was was bigger than the price. 

Một món nữa không thể không ăn ở Ams là khoai tây chiên. Khoai ở đây to hơn bình thường, và sốt mayonnaise là nguyên liệu chính làm tăng sức hút và độ nổi tiếng của khoai chiên ở Ams. Hàng chục người xếp hang dài chỉ để mua khoai chiên và giá cả rất phải chăng.

We ended up our crazy foodie day by doing dinner at Burger Meester. We could get cheaper price by ordering 3 miniburgers

Feeling completely full, happy and over-whelmed today, I started to head to our place to save energy for the crazy nightlife tonight. And tomorrow we will eat our way up to the Albert Cyup Markt - the biggest street-food market in Amsterdam.

Sau cả ngày ăn uống no say vui vẻ và choáng ngợp, chúng tôi từ từ về nhà để nạp năng lượng cho đêm nay ''quẩy''. Và ngày mai chúng tôi sẽ tiến tới chợ Albert Cuyp - khu chợ lớn nhất ở Amsterdam.
